The Federal Reserve is the central banking system of the United States. It was created in 1913 and consists of 12 regional reserve banks that oversee various aspects of the economy, including setting interest rates, managing money supply, supervising commercial banks, and providing financial services to depository institutions. The Federal Reserve also plays a critical role in determining monetary policy for all U.S. citizens by controlling inflation levels and influencing economic growth through its actions with respect to these activities as mandated by Congress under the Federal Reserve Act.
In addition to its primary role as a regulator of currency and credit markets within the US economy, it also functions as an international lender-of-last resort when other nations face serious financing difficulties or need emergency funds during times of crisis or natural disaster relief efforts around globe; this includes issuing loans when appropriate due to instability among foreign currencies or during large-scale global events such as pandemics like COVID–19 where access additional capital may be required at short notice on both private sector & public level alike (by offering special funding facilities). Moreover – although not technically part of their mandate – Fed’s open market operations are often used strategically towards helping maintain stable exchange rate between Dollar & other major world currencies which ultimately contributes significantly overall macroeconomic stability globally speaking too!
