Sec Chair Gary Gensler
Gary Gensler is the current Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). He was nominated by President Joe Biden to serve as SEC chair in January 2021 and assumed office in April 2021. Prior to his tenure at the SEC, he served as a professor at MIT Sloan School of Management, as chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission under President Obama, and held various positions on Wall Street including a stint at Goldman Sachs between 1982-1997.
Gensler has been an advocate for strong regulation within the cryptocurrency industry since his appointment to head up the SEC. In particular, he has voiced support for stricter rules regarding who may invest in digital assets such as cryptocurrencies, stating that investors should have “access only through regulated platforms”. He also believes that cryptocurrency exchanges should be subject to more stringent requirements such as those imposed by traditional stock exchanges like Nasdaq or NYSE Arca. Furthermore, he advocates for greater transparency from crypto projects so investors can better understand their risks when investing in these new technologies.
As Gensler takes over leadership of one of America’s most powerful financial regulatory bodies, it remains unclear what long-term impact his tenure will have on crypto markets around the world – however it appears likely that increased regulation will be part of any future vision he puts forth while leading this powerful agency into its next chapter regulating both traditional securities and digital assets alike.
