Regius Professor is a title that was created in the United Kingdom by the British monarchs to honor esteemed academics and scholars. The Regius Professorship is an honorary position bestowed upon a distinguished scholar from any field of study, including but not limited to mathematics, physics, engineering, law, medicine and theology. This prestigious title has been awarded since the late 15th century and continues to be used today in universities throughout the UK.
The process for obtaining this title begins with a nomination from either members of Parliament or senior officials within universities themselves who suggest potential recipients for consideration.
