New York Attorney General
The New York Attorney General (NYAG) is the chief legal officer of the state of New York, and oversees a wide range of civil and criminal matters within the state. The office was first established in 1847 and is currently headed by Letitia James. In addition to its statutory duties, the NYAG serves as an important advocate for consumers’ rights across a broad spectrum of issues.
In recent years, cryptocurrency has become one of those issues, with numerous investigations into digital assets being conducted under the purview of the NYAG’s office. These include inquiries into fraudulent activities related to initial coin offerings (ICOs), potential market manipulation on exchanges, investment frauds involving cryptocurrencies, and more. In particular, since 2018 there have been several high-profile cases targeting companies that have attempted to circumvent existing regulations or issued false statements about their products or services relating to cryptocurrencies.
The NYAG also works closely with other regulatory agencies such as the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) when pursuing cryptocurrency-related enforcement actions against individuals or firms operating in or from New York State. As part of this collaboration process, both parties share information obtained during investigations which can help inform future enforcement action decisions taken by either agency.
Overall then it is clear that protecting investors from fraud and abuse continues to be a key priority for regulators at both federal and state levels – including here in New York State where our own attorney general remains actively involved in monitoring activity surrounding digital assets like cryptocurrencies
