Network Latency
Network latency is the time it takes for data to travel from one point on a network to another. It is an important concept in computing and telecommunications, as it affects the speed of communication between computers and networks. Network latency can be caused by many factors, including physical distance, equipment delays, congestion control algorithms, protocol overhead and more.
Latency is typically measured in milliseconds (ms) or microseconds (μs). The faster the round-trip time (RTT), the lower the latency. For example, if two computers are connected over a local area network (LAN) with an RTT of 1 ms then they have low latency compared to two computers connected over the internet with an RTT of 100 ms or higher. Low network latency is desirable for applications such as online gaming or video streaming where real-time interaction is required. High network latency can cause actions to take longer than expected or result in laggy interactions that disrupt user experience.
Cryptocurrency transactions also require low-latency connections because each transaction needs to be verified quickly before being added into a block on the blockchain ledger system used by most cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum . Transactions must pass through numerous nodes distributed throughout different parts of world; therefore high latencies between these nodes can lead to long wait times for confirmation of transactions which may impact cryptocurrency prices due volatility resulting from long verification delays .
