Federal Reserve Chairman
The Federal Reserve Chairman is the head of the Board of Governors at the US Federal Reserve and is responsible for overseeing America’s monetary policy. The current chairman, Jerome Powell, was nominated by President Trump in February 2018 and took office on February 5th, 2018.
History of Chairmanship
The position of chair has existed since 1914 when it was created as part of a reform package following the Panic of 1907. In 1935 Congress amended the law so that presidents could appoint Fed chairs to four-year terms with Senate confirmation needed for re-appointment after those terms were up. Since then there have been 16 official chairs (eight Democrats and eight Republicans) who have served either one or two full four-year terms each: William McChesney Martin Jr., Arthur F Burns, G William Miller, Paul Volcker, Alan Greenspan , Ben Bernanke , Janet Yellen , and Jerome H Powell .
Role & Responsibilities
The role includes leading meetings between members from all twelve regional reserve banks along with five other board governors to reach consensus regarding economic policies such as setting interest rates or adjusting capital requirements for financial institutions among many others responsibilities according to their mandate.
