Ryuk Ransomware

by Hideo Nakamura
Ryuk Ransomware

Ryuk Ransomware is a form of malicious software (malware) that encrypts files on an infected computer and demands a ransom payment in order to decrypt the data. It was first discovered in August 2018, but has since become one of the most prolific ransomware attacks seen to date.

Ryuk ransomware can be spread through various means, such as phishing emails or malicious links. Once it infects a system, Ryuk will scan for certain file types and encrypt them using AES-256 encryption before displaying a ransom demand message for payment in Bitcoin. The amount demanded usually ranges from $50,000-$300,000 depending on the size of the organization affected by the attack.

It is important to note that paying this ransom does not guarantee successful decryption of files; instead victims should focus on preventing Ryuk infection by following best practices with regard to cybersecurity hygiene. These include keeping systems up-to-date with security patches/updates, regularly backing up important data onto external drives or cloud storage solutions and avoiding clicking on suspicious links or opening suspicious attachments sent via email or other forms of communication. Additionally users should be aware that many anti-virus programs do not detect Ryuk due its sophisticated nature so implementing additional security measures such as endpoint protection solutions may be helpful in mitigating risk associated with these kinds of threats.
