Internet Layer is a term used to refer to the suite of protocols, technologies and standards that enable communication between computers on the internet. It defines how information – such as emails, web pages and other digital data – is sent from one computer to another over the internet.
The Internet Layer comprises four layers: network access layer (also known as link layer), internet layer (also called IP layer or IP protocol), transport layer (TCP/UDP) and application layer (HTTP, SSH etc.). Each of these layers has its own set of rules for communication, which together form what we know as “the internet”.
At the lowest level is the Network Access Layer; it establishes physical connections between two devices so they can communicate. The next level up is the Internet Protocol or IP Level which works in conjunction with packet switching technology allowing each device on a network to identify itself and send packets of data back and forth without confusion. Above this lies the Transport Layer where protocols like Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) are used for reliable transmission of packets across networks. Finally at highest level there’s Application Layers whereby applications like email programs , web browsers utilize their respective protocols such as HTTP & SMTP respectively .
In cryptocurrency terms , when sending digital currency through an online wallet service , all 4 of these layers come into play by making sure that both those initiating transaction have valid addresses along with ensuring secure transfer while also verifying identity if need be .
