Fossil fuels contain high percentages of carbon and include petroleum or crude oil, coal, and natural gas.
Uses for Fossil Fuels
Fossil fuels are a major source of energy in many countries around the world. They have been used to generate electricity since the Industrial Revolution and remain an important component today in powering economies globally. In addition to providing electricity they also play a role in transportation as they can be refined into gasoline and diesel fuel for cars, trucks, ships and airplanes.
Environmental Impact of Fossil Fuels
The burning fossil fuels release pollutants such as carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere which contributes to climate change by trapping heat near Earth’s surface instead allowing it to escape into space like before humans started using them on such large scales during industrialization era centuries ago increasing global temperatures causing changes in weather patterns leading to extreme weather events like floods or droughts depending on region along with rising sea levels due their melting ice caps . Furthermore , mining fossil fuels has long term effects on environment caused by land disturbances , water pollution through leakage from pipes carrying fossil fuels underground & air pollution resulting from smoke released when extracting these resources leading some species extinction overtime .
