Prosegur, a firm specializing in security and asset custody, has revealed plans to establish a highly secure bunker aimed at providing custody services for digital assets in Brazil. To be situated in Sao Paolo, the facility will be equipped with various countermeasures to thwart unauthorized access to the protected assets.

Jose Angel Fernandez Freire, the Executive President of Prosegur Crypto, elaborated on the extensive security features that will be integrated into the bunker. Surveillance will be provided through six security cameras distributed across two separate monitoring centers. Furthermore, the facility will be equipped with a fog generator capable of filling the space in under 30 seconds in the event of a security breach, effectively immobilizing intruders.

As for the structural setup of the bunker, Freire stated:

The layout comprises a chamber without internet connectivity, and secure transportation within the facility will be executed exclusively by authorized personnel.

This Sao Paolo facility represents the second such installation managed by Prosegur; the first is located in Madrid, Spain. Both facilities offer a high-security environment for the storage of digital assets, primarily bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. In addition, Prosegur anticipates expanding its custody services to include tokenized real-world assets (RWA) as the technology matures.

Regulatory Environment and Future Outlook

One of the key benefits of establishing this facility in Brazil, according to Prosegur, is the country’s existing regulatory framework concerning digital assets. Freire emphasized that the conjunction of robust regulation and legal certainty enables financial institutions to tokenize assets securely.

Freire also clarified Prosegur’s client base, stating that the company will exclusively cater to businesses and institutions wishing to secure their digital assets, thereby confirming its B2B (business-to-business) model. He further stated:

We primarily serve legal entities and refrain from interacting with individual retail customers. Our operations emphasize complete asset segregation, ensuring that we do not engage in activities involving the assets in our custody.

Moreover, Prosegur envisages this Brazilian facility as an entry point for expansion into Latin America, specifically targeting countries with well-developed regulatory systems such as Chile. The company has disclosed plans to establish two additional bunkers by the conclusion of 2024, although the locations for these facilities remain confidential.

Sao Paolo, huh? Great to see more crypto infrastructure in Latam. Regulation seems to be in their favor too, that’s a big plus!

The mention of tokenized real-world assets caught my eye. If Prosegur can successfully safeguard these along with crypto, they could become a major player.

This sounds impressive but what about the costs? Running such a high-security facility must be expensive. Will they pass on these costs to the customer?

focused on B2B and not retail? Guess this isn’t for the small players but big institutions. Makes sense.

Good on them for acknowledging the regulatory environment. It’s often underestimated how much legal frameworks can affect these kinds of ventures.

24/7 surveillance, fog generators, armed transports… It’s like a scene from a sci-fi movie. But it’s real, amazing how fast technology’s moving.

six cameras and a fog generator? Now that’s what I call security. Wonder how they’ll handle physical access though.
