Mizuho Financial Group is a global financial services company based in Tokyo, Japan. Founded in 2002 as the result of a merger between Fuji Bank, Dai-ichi Kangyo Bank and The Industrial Bank of Japan, Mizuho Financial Group provides banking, securities, trust and asset management services to individuals and corporations worldwide.
The group operates through five core businesses: retail banking and private wealth management; corporate banking; capital markets; asset management; and global markets. Mizuho Financial Group’s cryptocurrency initiatives include several partnerships with existing blockchain technologies such as RippleNet for cross-border payments as well as its own proprietary digital currency dubbed J-Coin Pay which was launched in April 2018. The platform allows users to make payments via QR code or NFC technology at participating merchants around Japan including restaurants, convenience stores & more than 60 banks affiliated with Mizuho Financial Group. Additionally it enables customers to transfer money using only their mobile phones without incurring fees associated with traditional bank transfers or credit card transactions.
In 2019 the company announced that it would be launching an Ethereum-based cryptocurrency called Monex Coin which will be used by its customers within their ecosystem to purchase goods online from participating retailers including Amazon Japan & Rakuten among others while enjoying low transaction costs compared to conventional payment methods like debit cards or cash on delivery purchases.
The group plans further expansion into the cryptocurrency space with recent investments made into scaling solutions provider LayerX & decentralized finance protocol Set Protocol allowing them to access cutting edge blockchain infrastructure & DeFi protocols respectively – two key components necessary for any successful crypto venture today.
