What Is ERC-721?
ERC-721 is a non-fungible token (NFT) standard on the Ethereum blockchain. It was proposed in 2017 by Dieter Shirley and has become increasingly popular among developers, especially those working with digital collectibles like games, art assets and virtual real estate. Unlike other tokens such as Bitcoin or Ether which are fungible, meaning they are interchangeable with one another, ERC-721 tokens are unique and cannot be replaced by any other token. They represent ownership of an asset (such as a piece of digital art), giving the owner exclusive rights to it. This makes them ideal for use cases that require individual items to have distinct identities and attributes, such as trading cards or virtual land plots in cryptocurrency games.
