The United States Secretary of the Treasury is the head of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, which is concerned with financial and monetary matters, and until 2003 also included several federal law enforcement agencies. The secretary is a member of the President’s Cabinet, and is nominated by the President of the United States. The current U.S. Treasury Secretary is Steven Mnuchin who was appointed on February 13th 2017 by President Donald Trump to succeed Jack Lew under former president Barack Obama as 77th U.S Treasurer Secretary since 1789 when Alexander Hamilton became first ever person to occupy this position in newly established US government after its independence from Great Britain in late 18th century .
The duties performed by U.S Treasurer Secretary are extremely broad; however some key roles are mentioned below :
- Overseeing revenue collection for Federal Government including taxation through Internal Revenue Service (IRS)
- Issuing Federal debt instruments such as bonds in order to finance deficit spending
- Managing foreign currency exchange rate policies against other nations
- Regulating banking system within US borders including issuing new regulations for banks concerning anti-money laundering activities
- Collecting intelligence relating to economic security threats posed by foreign entities or individuals both domestically as well as abroad
In addition ,US treasurers secretary also advises president on fiscal policy issues related to economic growth , unemployment , inflation etc while working closely with other members of cabinet like secretaries from commerce department & labor department respectively.
