Tom Barkin is an American banker who was appointed as the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond in January 2018. He has been a leader in the financial services industry for over 30 years, and his experience spans across multiple sectors such as finance, technology, risk management, and global markets.
Before moving to the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Barkin served as Global Head of Risk Strategy at SunTrust Banks Inc., where he led efforts to ensure that risks were managed effectively across all lines of business. Prior to this role he had held various leadership positions within SunTrust’s enterprise risk division including Chief Financial Officer/Chief Operating Officer for Treasury & Investment Management and Executive Vice President for Capital Markets & Investment Solutions.
Barkin has also worked with Accenture providing strategic consulting services on a variety of topics related to banking strategy and operations transformation projects. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Duke University in economics and public policy studies and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
In addition to his professional career, Tom Barkin is involved with several organizations dedicated to improving economic opportunities in under-served communities throughout the United States. These include serving on The Kresge Foundation Board of Trustees; co-chairing The Aspen Institute’s Economic Opportunities Program Leadership Council; advising CNote—a social impact investment firm promoting small business growth among underserved populations; supporting Reify Health which works towards transforming healthcare delivery through AI;and helping launch two new initiatives: Signals (an open source toolkit designed to help people make better decisions about their money) and Opportunity Hub (which aims to increase access capital for minority entrepreneurs).
