A Sybil attack is an attack on a network in which a malicious entity attempts to gain control by creating multiple identities and overwhelming the system with fake requests. It is named after the character Sybil from the 1973 book of the same name, who suffered from Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). The attacker will create numerous false identities or accounts on a blockchain network to carry out malicious activities.

The main goal of such attacks is usually to manipulate consensus protocols, disrupt communication between honest peers, or interfere with transactions. For example, in one common form of a Sybil attack known as double-spending, an attacker could try to send two conflicting transactions using different identities; if successful, this would mean that only one transaction gets confirmed while the other fails. Additionally, attackers may use these created identities for censorship purposes by preventing genuine users from sending valid messages or accessing resources.

Sybil attacks are typically prevented through various forms of identity verification mechanisms like proof-of-work algorithms and other distributed consensus systems. Cryptocurrency networks can also utilize economic incentives such as fees for transactions and rewards for miners who help verify them in order to discourage bad actors from mounting attacks on their platforms. Finally, implementing reputation systems that track user behavior over time can be used as another method of defense against potential attackers trying to exploit weaknesses within a cryptocurrency protocol’s design.
