Spanish Flu

by Hideo Nakamura

Spanish Flu, also known as the 1918 influenza pandemic, was a severe global epidemic of an influenza virus that spread around the world in three waves from January 1918 to December 1920. Estimates vary widely on how many people died during this outbreak with some estimates claiming up to 100 million deaths worldwide. The Spanish Flu is one of the deadliest pandemics in human history and has had long-term effects on public health policies and practices.

The Spanish Flu first emerged in Europe before it eventually spread across the globe infecting nearly one-third of the world’s population at its peak. It is believed that this flu strain was especially virulent because it caused a cytokine storm – an overreaction of immune cells which can lead to respiratory failure, organ failure or death. Interestingly enough, individuals between 20-40 years old were more likely to be affected by this strain than any other age group – possibly due to their stronger immune systems being overwhelmed by such a powerful virus.

In terms of treatment options for those infected with Spanish Flu there were very few available at the time; most treatments focused on relieving symptoms rather than curing them outright, such as rest and fluids intake along with inhalation therapies like steam baths or mustard plasters for chest congestion relief. As medical science improved after World War I came antiseptic techniques (like hand washing), vaccines (which weren’t developed until 1933) and antibiotics became more widely used; all helping reduce mortality rates from infectious diseases significantly since then.

Today we understand much more about viruses than ever before thanks largely in part due to advancements made since Spanish Flu struck almost 100 years ago; however it still serves as a reminder about how quickly infections can spread throughout large populations if not managed properly despite our best efforts today. This means that proper precautionary measures must always be taken when dealing with contagious illnesses even if they may seem mild initially – something we should all keep in mind!
