SEC Staff
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is an independent government agency charged with protecting investors, maintaining fair, orderly, and efficient markets, and facilitating capital formation. The SEC staff are the individuals employed by the SEC to carry out these duties.
The majority of the SEC staff consists of attorneys who enforce federal securities laws and regulations as well as economists who advise on legal issues related to market structure, financial products, disclosure requirements for public companies, trading practices in securities markets, among other topics. In addition to attorneys and economists there are also accountants that audit registered investment advisers or broker-dealers; examiners responsible for inspecting financial institutions such as mutual funds; investigators working on complex fraud cases; systems analysts developing software applications used by the agency; communications personnel handling media inquiries about enforcement actions taken against companies or individuals violating federal security laws; compliance officers ensuring that firms comply with rules issued by the Commission; paralegals who assist attorneys in researching legal documents involving corporate transactions or civil litigation matters concerning alleged violations of law under their supervision.
The mission of the SEC staff is critical in helping ensure that investors have access to accurate information when making decisions regarding investments in publicly traded companies while deterring fraudulent activity at all levels within our nation’s securities industry.
