Nellie Liang is a financial economist and the former Director of the Division of Financial Stability at the Federal Reserve Board. She was appointed in October 2014 and served through June 2018. Prior to her appointment, she worked at the US Treasury Department for over two decades as an economist, eventually becoming Deputy Assistant Secretary for Economic Policy.
Liang is well known for her work on banking regulations, particularly those related to capital markets activities (like derivatives) and large complex institutions like “too big to fail” banks. In 2017, she led a review commissioned by then-Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen that aimed to reduce systemic risk posed by large banks via improved liquidity requirements. Her other notable works include overseeing stress tests conducted under Dodd-Frank Act and contributing towards Basel III regulation implementation in United States.
In 2019, Liang joined MIT Lab’s Digital Currency Initiative as Senior Fellow where she provides advice on cryptocurrency regulatory policy issues. She also serves as an advisor to various public sector organizations such as Bank of International Settlements (BIS), Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), Global Financial Innovation Network (GFIN) etc., which have been actively exploring opportunities presented by blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies recently.
