Macedonia, officially the Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), is a country located in southeastern Europe. It is bordered by Greece to the south, Bulgaria to the east and Albania to the west. The capital and largest city is Skopje, while other major cities include Bitola, Kumanovo and Ohrid. With a population of around 2 million people, it is one of smaller countries in the region.
Macedonia was part of Yugoslavia until 1991 when it declared its independence; after which it became a member state of the United Nations in 1993 under its provisional name ‘the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia’. Since then, it has been making progress towards full integration into Euro-Atlantic structures such as NATO and EU membership negotiations have begun.
In terms of cryptocurrency adoption, Macedonia remains relatively untouched due to high banking fees associated with international transfers and lack of legal clarity on cryptocurrencies usage or regulations by local authorities. However there are some initiatives being taken for increasing awareness about digital currency among citizens like Bitcoin Meetup groups that hold regular meetings throughout various cities in Macedonia educating locals on blockchain technology use cases and potential applications within their communities . Additionally more exchanges are beginning to accept Macedonian denar (MKD) as well as neighboring currencies such as Bulgarian lev(BGN) adding more options for purchasing crypto assets directly from local fiat sources . Furthermore , there are several upcoming projects focused on providing financial services using distributed ledger technologies taking place throughout this area showing potential future growth opportunities within this sector .
