Layering is a concept used in cryptocurrency transactions to break up large sums of money into smaller portions so as to mask the origin and destination of funds. This technique helps prevent financial authorities from tracking the source or destination of funds, allowing for increased anonymity. It is often used by criminals wishing to hide their activities, but can also be employed by those who wish to keep their transactions private.
The layering process involves breaking down a larger sum of money into multiple smaller payments through the use of various intermediary wallets and accounts. Each payment goes through several different hops before eventually reaching its intended recipient, making it difficult for anyone to trace back its origins. The more complex the network is built, with more wallets and intermediaries involved, the harder it becomes to track any given transaction’s origin or destination.
To further increase anonymity during this process many users utilize mixing services which ‘mix’ coins from different sources together in order for them not be easily linked back their original source. Some exchanges even provide built-in mixers that allow users easy access to such services without having to visit third party websites or doing extra steps themselves – although these come at an additional fee usually charged by the exchange itself but may still offer better privacy than going through one single mixer service provider only (which could potentially link all mixed coins together).
Layering should always be done carefully as some jurisdictions have laws preventing layering if done solely for criminal purposes – meaning that you might end up being viewed suspiciously when attempting such activities without proper legal advice beforehand!
