Kgosientsho Ramokgopa is a South African politician and the current Executive Mayor of Tshwane, the capital city of Gauteng province. He was elected to office in August 2016 after winning a closely contested mayoral election.
Prior to his election as mayor, Ramokgopa served as Chief Whip for the ANC in the Tshwane municipality from 2011-2016. During this time he also acted as Deputy City Manager for Technical Services at Tshwane Metro Council.
Ramokgopa has been an advocate for cryptocurrency adoption in South Africa since 2017 when he announced that Tshwane would be launching its own digital currency called “Tcoin” with financial institutions including major banks such as Standard Bank supporting it. This initiative would allow citizens of the city access to banking services through mobile devices without needing to open bank accounts or use credit cards. In addition, businesses will be able to pay taxes using Tcoin allowing them quick and easy access to governmental services while reducing their need for physical cash payments or manual paperwork processing.
In 2018, Ramokgopa worked with experts from various public and private sector organizations on a blockchain project aimed at improving public service delivery within Tshwane by creating transparency between government departments and citizen interaction points such as schools, hospitals and police stations among others. The project has been well received by residents of the city who now have more confidence in their interactions with local authorities due to increased visibility into processes which were previously opaque or slow moving due bureaucracy associated with legacy systems implementations .
Finally, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has displayed support for other cryptocurrencies beyond those developed locally through initiatives like participating in Bitcoin Trading competitions within South Africa’s financial sector alongside other industry leaders such JPMorgan Chase & Co., Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Barclays PLC etcetera . These activities foster an environment conducive towards welcoming new investments into digital currencies enabling wider acceptance of all forms of digital payments throughout South Africa’s economy .
