What is the IMF?
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an international organization that works to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth. It was founded in 1944 as part of the Bretton Woods Agreement following World War II and currently has 189 member countries. The IMF’s primary purpose is to ensure the stability of the international monetary system by monitoring exchange rates, providing policy advice to its members, and lending resources when needed. The IMF also provides technical assistance on topics such as macroeconomic management, taxation policy-making, public finance issues like budgeting processes or debt management reform. In addition to these activities, it works closely with other organizations such as the World Bank and G20 nations in order to coordinate policies which improve global economic governance.
