Gerhard van Deventer is a South African software engineer and cryptocurrency investor. He is known for his work on blockchain technology, computer security, and digital asset management.
Van Deventer graduated from the University of Pretoria in 2001 with a degree in Computer Science. After working as an IT specialist at several companies, he shifted his focus to cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology in 2013 when Bitcoin was gaining traction as a viable form of currency. Since then he has been heavily invested in this space, launching multiple projects and investments related to crypto-assets such as Ethereum Classic, Zcash, Dashcoin, Ripple and others.
He also co-founded two cryptocurrency exchanges – Luno (formerly BitX)and Ice3x – both of which are based out of South Africa but have international reach through partnerships with banks around the globe. In addition to these ventures Gerhard is actively involved with several other projects within the industry including cryptocurrency wallets and payment solutions that aim to make it easier for individuals to interact with different currencies across boundaries.
Van Deventer’s research interests lie primarily within cryptography and distributed ledger technologies (DLT). He has published numerous papers on topics such as zero-knowledge proofs (ZKP), secure multi-party computation (SMPC), consensus algorithms like proof of stake (PoS) & delegated proof of stake(DPoS), etc., which all contribute towards making blockchains more secure & efficient platforms for transactions & data storage/transfer over networks at large scales .
Recently Gerhard joined Fintech Advisory Services Ltd., where he holds Chief Technology Officer position leading their efforts towards developing innovative financial services using distributed ledgers technologies like Hyperledger Fabric or Ethereum among other protocols..
