General Election
A general election is an election in which all or most members of a given political body are chosen. In the case of national legislatures, for example, this usually means that all seats are up for election. General elections are typically held periodically—in many countries they occur every few years and coincide with the ending of certain legislative terms. They provide a way to determine who will hold public office and shape policy decisions over the coming term.
General elections can take place under various voting systems, from simple plurality voting (often referred to as first-past-the-post) to proportional representation or preferential voting; individual nations may also implement additional rules such as runoff ballots if no candidate receives a majority on the initial ballot count. Depending on local laws and customs, general elections may be required by law (as in some parliamentary democracies), encouraged (as in presidential republics), or simply left open to voters’ discretion; in any case they are generally expected to reflect popular opinion within each jurisdiction at least somewhat accurately.
