G20 Crypto
G20 crypto is a term used to describe the group of 20 countries that have committed to collaborating on global efforts related to cryptocurrency. The G20, or Group of Twenty, was established in 1999 and consists of finance ministers and central bank governors from 19 countries plus the European Union. In 2019, they announced their intention to develop regulations for cryptocurrencies at their Osaka Summit meeting.
The G20’s commitment to developing regulations for cryptocurrencies represents an important step towards wider adoption of digital assets by governments around the world. It has been suggested that with guidance from these international institutions, many more countries may soon follow suit and formally recognize cryptocurrencies as legitimate financial instruments within their borders.
In 2020, the G20 issued a statement saying that it would continue its work on “the broader landscape” surrounding cryptocurrency regulation with plans for further discussions during upcoming meetings in 2021. This could potentially lead to specific recommendations being made regarding how individual nations should go about regulating digital assets like Bitcoin or Ethereum in their own jurisdictions—something which is currently lacking in most parts of the world today.
