Ethereum-based tokens are digital assets that operate on the Ethereum blockchain. They can be used to represent a variety of different items, such as shares in a company or project, loyalty points, physical goods and services, virtual currencies and more. Tokens built on the Ethereum network are known as ERC20 tokens due to their compliance with the ERC20 standard.
ERC20 is an official protocol for proposing improvements to the Ethereum Network – it defines six functions which must be implemented by all ERC20 compliant contracts: balanceOf(), transfer() approve() allowance(), totalSupply() and transferFrom(). In order for users (and computers) to interact with these tokens there needs to exist some form of bridge from traditional finance into this distributed ledger technology (DLT).
