Equity Market
The equity market is a marketplace where investors buy and sell stocks, bonds, options and other securities. The equity market is also known as the stock market or sharemarket. It is one of the most important markets in finance because it provides capital for businesses to grow, create jobs, and produce goods and services that benefit society as a whole.
In an equity market transaction, investors purchase shares of companies with the expectation that they will increase in value over time due to favorable performance by the issuing company or industry sector changes which cause favorable price movements. Investors may choose from various types of stocks including common stock (also referred to as ordinary shares), preferred stock (which has priority in dividend payments) or convertible bonds/stocks which can be exchanged into common stock at specified times under certain conditions.
Equity markets are typically regulated by government authorities such as Securities Exchange Commission(SEC). These regulations provide rules governing how participants trade on these exchanges ensuring fairness & transparency while protecting investor interests against fraudulent activities like insider trading etc.. Additionally some countries have specific laws related to foreign ownership of equities e.g Foreign Investment Promotion Board(FIPB) approval requirement for Indian citizens investing abroad .
