#Environmental Impact of Cryptocurrency
Cryptocurrency, which is a digital currency secured by cryptography, has been gaining in popularity over the last decade. As with any form of technology and finance, cryptocurrency can have an environmental impact depending on how it is used. In this article we will discuss the potential impacts that cryptocurrencies may have on our environment.

##Energy Consumption
The most well-known environmental effect associated with cryptocurrency is its energy consumption. This stems from two factors: firstly, it takes a significant amount of electricity to power computer networks that run blockchain applications; secondly, as more people buy into cryptocurrencies and participate in mining activities (the process through which new coins are created), the computing power needed increases exponentially leading to higher energy usage levels overall. Estimates suggest that Bitcoin alone accounts for approximately 0.1% of global electricity consumption each year – equivalent to several large countries such as Switzerland or Denmark – whilst Ethereum consumes around twice this amount annually (equivalent to 6 million US households).

The majority of current crypto miners rely predominantly upon fossil fuels for their operations due to their reliability and cost effectiveness compared other renewable sources such as wind/solar etc., though some do also use hydroelectricity where available locally e.g China’s Sichuan province currently provides 40%+ of globalhash rate (~computational processing) within its boundaries via hydropower stations along rivers there .Many experts believe however ,that if all miners switched entirely away from fossil fuels then these figures could be reduced significantly & would bring about far less damage than burning oil /coal does presently when generating electrical power..

It should also be noted that not all currencies require proof-of-work protocols thereby reducing dramatically their carbon footprint ;for example IOTA uses Directed Acyclic Graph algorithms instead meaning no extra hardware/energy expenditure required at all !

##Mining Operations disposal practices & Waste production Another factor contributing towards the negative environmental effects caused by Crypto Mining involves improper waste disposal methods utilised mainly by larger scale professional operators who tend not discard discarded parts properly after they’ve mined out a particular coin or token ..such unacceptable behaviour often results in harm being done both directly & indirectly across ecosystems globally but particularly so near mines themselves …so hazardous material management needs attention here !

##Data Centre Cooling Finally data centers housing servers supporting blockchains need cooling systems installed too in order keep temperatures down inside them during peak times thus avoiding costly downtimes due server failure resulting from overheating ..means traditional air conditioning equipment must generally employed here consuming further amounts energy unnecessarily if efficient alternatives aren’t found soon enough!
