Emmanuel Macron (born 21 December 1977) is a French politician who has been President of France since 14 May 2017. He was previously Minister of the Economy, Industry and Digital Affairs from 2014 to 2016. A graduate of the prestigious École nationale d’administration, he started his career as an inspector in the Inspectorate General of Finances before becoming an investment banker at Rothschild & Cie Banque. In 2012, he joined newly elected President François Hollande’s cabinet as Deputy Secretary-General for Economic Affairs before being appointed Minister for Economy and Finance in August 2014 under Prime Ministers Manuel Valls and Bernard Cazeneuve.
As president, Macron has sought to modernize France through digitalization initiatives such as launching a cryptocurrency regulation task force that would be responsible for drafting regulations concerning cryptocurrencies within two years; introducing tax exemptions on capital held in cryptocurrencies; allowing French companies to pay their employees’ salaries using Bitcoin or other virtual currencies; legalizing Initial Coin Offerings (ICO); establishing incentives aimed at attracting blockchain projects into France; implementing measures related to anti-money laundering (AML) requirements regarding certain transactions involving virtual currency platforms among others.
