Dr. Doom (aka Nouriel Roubini) is an American economist and professor of economics at New York University’s Stern School of Business, best known for his pessimistic views on the state of global economies since the mid-2000s. He has been especially vocal in his criticism of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Ripple due to their volatility and lack of regulatory oversight.
In 2018 Dr. Doom predicted a crash in cryptocurrency prices that would be “worse than any bear market we have seen” – which was ultimately proven correct when Bitcoin lost more than 80% of its value by late 2019. His predictions are often met with hostility from those within the crypto community who disagree with him or believe he does not understand what blockchain technology can do beyond being used as a speculative asset class. Nevertheless his outspokenness continues to make headlines across mainstream media outlets worldwide whenever he speaks about digital assets or economic conditions in general.
At times Dr Roubini has offered constructive advice to industry participants; most notably during a speech given at Consensus: Invest 2017 where he suggested ways for companies involved with cryptocurrencies could bridge gaps between traditional finance and emerging markets through regulation and consumer protection measures such as KYC/AML standards compliance and improved transparency practices for ICOs (Initial Coin Offerings). Despite still remaining wary overall about cryptos long term prospects, it appears that Dr Doom may no longer view them solely through pessimism but rather accept that they represent something far more complex – one which needs careful consideration if it is ever going achieve widespread adoption amongst institutional investors globally
