Democrats are a major political party in the United States. Founded in 1828, they have been one of two main parties since the early 19th century. The Democratic Party advocates for progressive ideals and policies such as economic justice, civil rights protection, environmentalism, healthcare reform and education reform.
The current President of the United States is Joe Biden who was elected to office on November 3rd 2020 while running under the Democratic banner with Senator Kamala Harris as his Vice Presidential nominee. The majority of Congress is also held by Democrats at both House and Senate levels.
In 2021 there has been a renewed push from Democratic leaders to pass legislature that would increase taxes on higher earners or businesses so funds can be redirected into public services like health care or infrastructure projects; create new social programs such as universal basic income; promote green energy initiatives through government subsidies; expand gun control legislation amid an increasing rate of mass shootings across America amongst other progressive ideas proposed during this period .
