Cryptocurrencies are digital or virtual currencies that use cryptography for security. Cryptography is the process of encoding and decoding information, which makes it difficult to counterfeit or double-spend coins. The most well-known cryptocurrency is Bitcoin, but there are many others such as Ethereum, Litecoin, Monero and Ripple.

Cryptocurrency transactions occur on a peer-to-peer network rather than through traditional banking systems. All transactions are recorded on an immutable distributed ledger known as a blockchain. Once verified by miners (people with specialized computers who confirm all new blocks of data), the transaction becomes permanent and cannot be altered retroactively without altering subsequent blocks in the chain—making it impossible to tamper with records after they have been written into the blockchain ledger. This type of system eliminates fraud risks associated with conventional payment methods where false payments can be made due to incorrect account details entered at checkout time or reversed after payment has cleared from both parties’ accounts making them vulnerable to chargebacks .

In addition to providing users with more secure payments options than traditional forms of currency, cryptocurrencies also provide access to global markets thanks their decentralized nature — something not possible before this technology was invented since national laws would often prevent citizens from investing outside their countries’ borders using local fiat currency.. Additionally cryptocurrencies allow individuals greater control over how they store value; instead relying upon banks or other third party financial institutions holding your funds you can keep your money yourself securely stored away in wallets located on personal devices like smartphones and laptops .. Furthermore some cryptos offer advantages over regular money including faster processing times lower fees , privacy features , fractional ownership rights etc..

Finally its important note that while cryptocurrencies may appear similar physical cash -most notably because no physical representation exists -they’re actually quite different since no central bank backs these assets up nor does any government issue them meaning supply isn’t determined by monetary policy decisions… As such investors should take caution when considering investment opportunities involving cryptoassets given volatility inherent within market prices …
