Crypto Winter

Crypto Winter

Crypto Winter is a term used to describe the prolonged decrease in cryptocurrency prices that began in late 2018 and has lasted until 2020. It is seen as a continuation of the bear market that started at the end of 2017, when Bitcoin’s price peaked near $20,000 USD before crashing to around $3,200 USD by December 2018. During this period many other cryptocurrencies followed suit, with most experiencing significant losses throughout 2019 and into early 2020.

The causes behind Crypto Winter are numerous and varied but could be attributed to several factors such as:
– Lack of regulatory clarity on how governments will treat crypto assets – causing uncertainty among investors;
– The retreat from investments made during the 2017 bull run (particularly ‘weak hands’) which increased selling pressure;
– A general lack of liquidity within certain markets due to weak trading volumes or limited access for smaller investors;

Despite these challenges there are still reasons for optimism about the future prospects for crypto assets going forward. For starters there have been notable developments towards wider adoption including institutions entering into partnerships with exchanges offering custody services & derivatives products based on digital coins/tokens like Bakkt & Fidelity Digital Assets Services respectively. Both projects offer an increase level of trust from traditional finance firms who may not have previously considered investing in cryptos prior to their launch – potentially instilling more confidence amongst institutions looking into getting involved in this space. Moreover recent news reports suggest that major banks like Goldman Sachs & JP Morgan Chase are actively exploring ways they can become involved too! This all bodes well regarding potential growth opportunities ahead despite any short term volatility we might experience along way
