Anwar Ibrahim (born 10 August 1947) is a Malaysian politician who served as the eighth Prime Minister of Malaysia from 16 July 2018 to 24 February 2020. He has also held positions such as Leader of the Opposition from 2008 to 2015 and Deputy Prime Minister from 1993 to 1998.

Ibrahim’s political career has been marked by numerous controversies and accusations, most notably his 1998 conviction for sodomy that led to his imprisonment. However, in 2004, the Federal Court overturned his conviction due to irregularities with the evidence presented during the trial. Since then, he has become an advocate for human rights and democracy, not only in Malaysia but also in other parts of Southeast Asia.

In 1999, Anwar founded the People’s Justice Party (Parti Keadilan Rakyat), which became one of the major opposition parties alongside the Islamic Party of Malaysia (Parti Islam Se-Malaysia or PAS). In 2008, Ibrahim won a majority vote in Parliament, becoming the leader of the opposition party until his retirement in 2018 due to age restrictions set forth by the party rules within the People’s Justice Party (PKR).

Under new leadership from Dr Wan Azizah Ismail, PKR joined forces with the Pakatan Harapan coalition prior to the general elections held on May 9th, 2018. This coalition’s victory over the incumbent Barisan Nasional government allowed Anwar Ibrahim, who had been pardoned by King Muhammad V, to reclaim his former post as the eighth prime minister, according to Mahathir Mohamad’s succession plan through royal appointment. However, this transition did not materialize due to an ongoing power struggle between ruling factions, resulting in the dissolution of the government via a snap election on March 2nd, 2020. This paved the way for the current administration headed by Muhyiddin Yassin under the Perikatan Nasional alliance since mid-March of the same year.

Despite recent developments, many speculate that Mr. Anwar will eventually return to public office given his strong support among citizens and a vast network of close allies, especially across rural areas where popular sentiment remains largely favorable towards the charismatic statesman. Anwar is still revered for his past accomplishments while serving the nation in various official capacities, including deputy prime minister from 1993 to 1998. During that time, he left amid corruption charges, which were later dismissed by a court order several years following his incarceration. This makes his comeback possible, even at the advanced age of 72, representing a symbol of hope for countless followers.

Despite the turbulent times ahead for the country, which is facing multiple simultaneous crises such as economic poverty, rising unemployment rates, growing inequality, and a surge in crime rates, urgent measures are required to restore stability to the region. Malaysia’s challenges in the 21st century onwards necessitate immediate action, and Anwar Ibrahim is seen as a potential leader who can address these issues effectively.
