In the midst of the ongoing excitement and growing interest in Bitcoin-based Ordinal inscriptions, the co-founder of the Capsule 21 podcast has unveiled Ethscriptions, a comparable innovation that leverages the Ethereum blockchain. As portrayed on the online portal ethscriptions.com, Ethscriptions offer a “fresh approach to crafting and disseminating digital artifacts on Ethereum via transaction calldata.”

From Bitcoin to Ethereum: Ethscriptions Emerge as the Talk of the Cryptoverse

This weekend, the crypto community has been engaging in conversations about a novel technology that mirrors Bitcoin’s Ordinal inscriptions, but with a twist – it capitalizes on the Ethereum blockchain. This innovative concept, named Ethscriptions, was introduced by Tom Lehman, the co-founder of the Capsule 21 podcast. Lehman, who is also a co-founder and the former CEO of genius.com, is the brain behind Ethscriptions.

During a Twitter Spaces event on June 16, 2023, Lehman showcased this groundbreaking technology. Simultaneously, Middlemarch initiated a thread discussing the concept, while also introducing a collection titled “Ethereum Punks.” Ethscriptions are generated on Ethereum by completing transactions with unique data URIs. Lehman clarified that “duplicate content is disregarded” and “all valid mimetypes are accommodated.”

To guarantee uniqueness, no prior Ethscription in a block or within the same transaction block can duplicate the content. The transfer of an Ethscription takes place when a transaction’s input data is a valid Ethscription’s hash, and the transaction initiator is the Ethscription’s owner. A file used for an inscription on the Ethereum chain should not exceed the 96-kilobyte limit.

“The person receiving the creation transaction becomes the initial owner of the Ethscription, while the sender of the creation transaction is identified as the Ethscription’s creator,” explained Lehman. He has also inaugurated a website, ethscriptions.com, where visitors can view all existing Ethscriptions or explore them by address.

This platform also simplifies the process of creating inscriptions on the Ethereum chain. Since the debut of Lehman’s concept, Ethscriptions have proliferated by the thousands. Ethscriptions can be located on Opensea, and the Emblem Vault team has facilitated trading of an Ethscription collection on their non-fungible token (NFT) platform.

Really interesting, gotta admit. but how unique can these Ethscriptions actually be if they’re made from the same transaction calldata? kinda curious here..
