The president of France, Emmanuel Macron, has taken a hard stance on the policy of Europe having its own strategic autonomy. He said that when it comes to Taiwan, Europe should not be forced to pick between China or the United States. Macron made this statement while on a visit to Amsterdam and many people had different opinions about this choice of his. Basically, he doesn’t want Europe to act like someone’s slave just because they are an ally of the U.S.

Macron Urges Europe to Stay Neutral In any Taiwan Conflict

French President Emmanuel Macron recently visited Amsterdam and made it clear that France, as well as the rest of Europe, should stay out of any potential war conflict in Taiwan. During a press conference with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on April 12, Mr. Macron said: “Europe should remain neutral and not side with any group if a fight in Taiwan were to happen.”

French President Emmanuel Macron said that even if we have alliances with other countries, it doesn’t mean we don’t have control over our own decisions. He visited China and told them that Europe could not interfere with their conflict with Taiwan. His point is that any attempts to solve the issue between Taiwan and China would only increase the tension between them.

Back then, Macron was against depending on the U.S. and getting mixed up in their problems. He said: “It would be wrong to be scared and think that we must follow America.”

Macron, Rubio, Trump

President Macron’s words caused many different reactions. Some people agreed with his opinion about the global vision, but some others did not like it because of the way he talked about China. U.S. senator Marco Rubio disagreed with what President Macron said about Taiwan and argued that if Europeans don’t support either the United States or China concerning this issue, then European countries shouldn’t show their support for Ukraine as well.

Former U.S. president Donald Trump had a lot to say about the situation and he was not very nice when he said that while President Macron was his friend, he had gone too far in how close he was getting to China. Macron didn’t respond, saying that preventing an worsen of the situation was more important than what Donald Trump had said.

Recently, a lot of people are challenging the United States’ control in Europe and the Middle East. On April 4th, after some countries agreed to cuts on oil production, Saudi Arabia’s leader said he no longer wants to make America happy. Macron has made his own plan for ‘strategic autonomy.’ Do you think about this policy? Let us know what you think by leaving a comment down below!
