The Bank of Russia has informed that all 13 banks aiming to take part in the pilot program for the digital ruble have concluded their preparations and are set to join the upcoming trial. Olga Skorobogatova, the first deputy governor of the Bank of Russia, mentioned that clients of these banks will have the opportunity to apply for participation in the pilot “after a certain period.”

The Bank of Russia’s Initiative for the Digital Ruble

Preparations are in the final stages for the impending digital ruble pilot test, scheduled to commence on August 15. The bank recently made an announcement that all the banks expressing interest in this trial have given their confirmation to partake, and they have made specific technical arrangements tailored for this purpose.

As per a report from the Russian state news agency Tass, Olga Skorobogatova, the first deputy governor of the Bank of Russia, stated:

“All 13 banks have successfully completed the required technical preparations, including the development of their own mobile applications, and are now ready to initiate transactions with real clients in collaboration with us.”

The extent of involvement of these banks was previously disclosed by Stanislav Danysh, the chairman of the board of Ingosstrakh Bank, who clarified that the participating banks would facilitate individuals and businesses to engage in transactions using the digital ruble. However, the initial phase, he noted, would have limited scope and would involve only bank partners and employees.

Participation of Retail Users Confirmed

Although Skorobogatova did not provide a specific timeframe for the pilot test’s activities, she did clarify that the customers of these banks would eventually have the opportunity to directly engage in the pilot program.

Skorobogatova elaborated:

“After a certain period, retail customers of the banks taking part in the pilot project will be eligible to submit applications to participate in real transactions involving the digital ruble.”

Additionally, there are expectations that other banks not currently participating in this year’s trial will be included in subsequent phases of the pilot test. Skorobogatova disclosed that sixteen more banks are slated to join the digital ruble pilot network in the following year.

In the previous month, the Bank of Russia had also explored the possibility of linking the digital ruble network with other digital currencies to establish connectivity between distinct payment systems. This approach could enable the bank to utilize the digital ruble as a cross-border payment currency. At that time, Elvira Nabiullina, the governor of the Bank of Russia, indicated that discussions were ongoing with friendly nations to explore various methods of achieving this integration.

We’d like to hear your thoughts on the advancements of the digital ruble initiative and its integration within the banking landscape. Please feel free to share your opinions in the comments section below.
